GUWAHATI: One of the most prestigious educational institutions in the region, Cotton University, conducted its annual survey of bird species on the campus. Apart from recording the number of birds, the participants also categorised the diverse avian population on the campus. This exercise is conducted every year to encourage the students as well as staff of the university to take care of the birds, both on campus and outside the same. The senior faculty members mentioned that a large number of participants showed genuine interest in the exercise and are moving ahead towards being bird watchers and enthusiasts.

It was informed that the Department of Environmental Biology and Wildlife Sciences conducts this exercise every year, and it continues for four days. Several key statistics, including changing bird populations and habits, as well as the arrival of new species and the non-arrival of previously present species, were also noted during this exercise. It also aims to educate the university members regarding local as well as migratory birds, their habitats, seasons of visit, food, and nesting habits.

It can be noted that the campus is visited by at least eight species of migratory birds and several varieties of local ones. A display board titled Birds of Cotton Campus was also set up near the auditorium to share information with other students and staff of the university.
