GUWAHATI: “Cotton University is a name synonymous with quality and is instrumental in creating exceptional human resources”, said Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria while speaking at the 123rd foundation day of the institution held on the university campus here on Saturday. Attending the foundation day, Governor Kataria paid rich tributes to all the protagonists like Manik Chandra Baruah, Sir Henry John Stedman Cotton, and others who played crucial roles in establishing the institution. He also said that Cotton University has already garnered accolades for its remarkable role in academics and research publications at the national level. With hopes held high, it is expected that the university will maintain its esteemed reputation in its march towards the future, the governor added.

Earlier this morning, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also graduated from the institution and served as the Cotton College Union Society’s (CCUS) general secretary during three periods, took to his Twitter handle and wrote, ‘It is an important day for every Cottonian. Today is the Foundation Day of erstwhile Cotton College and now Cotton University. As a Cottonian, I recall so many memories at this moment. On the birthday of Cotton College, my heartiest wishes to all associated with this institution Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu also wished the VC, teachers, students, and alumni of Cotton University through his Twitter handle.

The governor said during his address that, true to its name and fame, Cotton University should take the lead in meeting the challenges that present-day society is facing. He also said that the university, with its innovative and scientific pursuits, should work towards academic development through the incorporation of the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 into its syllabi and course structure. Referring to climate change, which has posed a global challenge requiring unified and dedicated efforts to combat its effects, the Governor said that in view of this, Cotton University, with its exceptional resource pool, should take steps to tackle climate change.

He further said that Assam is blessed with abundant resources and holds immense potential. By harnessing these resources effectively and efficiently, the state can bring about substantial economic revitalization. Kataria also appealed to the teachers to wholeheartedly dedicate their services to helping the students inculcate a scientific temperament to use the resources of the state and fuel transformative changes, propelling the state to greater heights. It may be mentioned that eminent scientist Prof. Bhupendra Nath Goswami delivered the foundation lecture. Vice Chancellor Cotton University, Prof. R.C. Deka, Pro Vice Chancellor Professor G.C. Wary, the Registrar, Deans, faculty members, and students were present on the occasion, stated a press release.
