GUWAHATI: No plot of land is safe from encroachers in the State as a whole and Guwahati in particular. It has come to light that even Cotton University - formerly Cotton College - the alma mater of many a prominent citizen of Assam, has fallen prey to encroachers.
The Registrar of Cotton University wrote to the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (M) recently and mentioned that encroachers have taken possession of the northern boundary of a plot of land allotted to the erstwhile Cotton College at the Rupnagar locality. The total land allotted by the Government amounts to 14 bighas, 4 kathas and 4 lesas and it is covered under by Dag No. 1116 and Dag No. 1118/1883 under the Ulubari Mouza.
The Registrar stated in the letter that a part of the land is being used for staff quarters and a new building is under construction for additional staff quarters. However, the university authority is unable to erect a boundary wall on the northern side due to the presence of encroachers.
He further complained that although they have approached the Circle Office concerned several times, yet the latter has failed to either demarcate the boundary or evict the encroachers from the land allotted to the university. The Registrar requested the Deputy Commissioner to initiate steps to evict the encroachers from the university's land.
