GUWAHATI: The commoners in Assam lend their unstinted support to the government on the issue of the lockdown, if it needs extension or not.
This is reporter met some people from diverse walks of life. He found that most of the working people support the government on steps being taken to combat corona.
Nikita Das, a housewife residing at Bhetapara in Guwahati, said, “The lockdown has its impact in the kitchen. We make do with whatever we get. Initially the situation was very difficult. However, with the government taking various measures we’ve got some relief. It is up to the government to extend or withdraw the lockdown. If it is extended, naturally the government will take some matching measures so as to give the people a succour.”
Hibjul Rahman, a daily-wage earner through construction works staying at Hatigaon in Guwahati, said, “I’ve been indoors even since the lockdown has been imposed. I’ve some money. That apart, I’ve got some relief materials from the government and others. If the lockdown is extended, we’ll be in trouble. What will eat if we can’t earn? In such a situation, the government will have to extend assistance.”
Rajen Sarma, a cab driver staying at Hengrabari, said, “We’re facing crisis as we cannot ply our taxis since the declaration of the lockdown. It is too early to say what will be the situation. Public health is of utmost importance. If the lockdown is extended, the government has to take our plight into account.”
Ashok Barman, a government employee, said, “I’ve accomplished the duty of helping the needy people with essential commodities in accordance with the appeal made by the State government. Succour from the government will depend largely on as to what extent we can maintain social distancing. When the entire world is in such crisis, personal problems are secondary. The main problem is COVID-19.”
