GUWAHATI: Every since the election came to an end the COVID-19 cases in Assam along with Kamrup (Metro) is witnessing a constant surge.
As per state government data, from May 1 till May 12, 17276 active cases and 219 deaths has only been reported from Kamrup (Metro).
It is to be mentioned here that a massive spike in cases along with deaths was reported on May 11. On this day 1585 COVID-19 positive cases was reported and 35 people succumb to the infection.
Further, in the light of the increasing numbers in COVID-19 patients, Principal Sectary to the Health and Family Welfare, Anurag Goel in a letter to the Deputy Commissioner Kamrup (M) directed to set up additional COVID Care Centres (CCC) in the city outside state government hospitals/institutions.
Further as per the letter, now it has been decided that, at this stage, CCCs will be made functional at following locations in a phased manner depending on the case load. The locations are:
Delhi Public School, Ahomgaon with a bed capacity of 900-970, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Development Institute, Guwahati with a bed capacity of 300, IIT, Guwahati with a bed capacity of 500, IIHM with a bed capacity of 500, Assam Engineering College with a bed capacity of 800, Veterinary College with a bed capacity of 800 and GIMT, Guwahati with a bed capacity of 900.
Further, in this connection the deputy commissioner is requested to move local PWD officials to take up minor repair/ renovation works.
It is to be mentioned here that, currently Guwahati city has 4 Covid Care Centres- Sarusajai with a bed capacity of 430, SIRD with a bed capacity of 274, Royal Global University with a bed capacity of 900 and Rituraj Hotel with a bed capacity of 80.
On the other hand, hospitals in Guwahati consists of GMCH with a bed capacity of 877, MMCH with a bed capacity of 222, Sonapur District Hospital with a bed capacity of 147, Kalapahar Covid Care Hospital with a bed capacity of 162, Ayurvedic College and Hospital with a bed capacity of 120 are all at the brink of getting filled up.
Meanwhile, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has converted 288 of its passenger coaches into Covid care isolation wards and is also equipping the existing six railway hospitals with oxygen plants, NFR General Manager Anshul Gupta said on Thursday.
While addressing the media virtually from NFR headquarters in Maligaon, near Guwahati, Gupta said that the NFR has provided facilities for treatment of Covid positive patients in six of its railway hospitals with a total of 354 beds.
Each of these special wards has all the basic healthcare facilities required for the treatment of Covid positive patients with mild symptoms. According to the official, 477 Covid patients have been treated in railway hospitals since last month.
In Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, on an average 1,500 daily cases are detected. This accounts for nearly 25% of the total cases detected daily in the state.
