GUWAHATI: The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Monday staged a dharna in Guwahati to protest against the killing of farmers in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri. The activists demanded a high-level probe into the incident and pressed for the repeal of the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 and Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020. The CPI activists also demanded that the people who were evicted from Mikir Bamuni in Nagaon district must be rehabilitated and granted land pattas. They also alleged that the eviction drive in Assam was "communal" in nature and should be stopped. CPI State secretary Munin Mahanta, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) general secretary Ramen Das and other leaders were present.
