GUWAHATI: The Crime Branch of Guwahati Police has arrested another person, identified as Prasanta Boro alias Rinku alias Victor (33 years) of Kamal Nagar in Barama of Baksa district in the BTAD, in connection with the case registered over smuggling of Myanmarese supari (Crime Branch Police Station case No. 01/2022; U/S 120(B)/379/411/465/468/471 IPC).

Boro was apprehended from Byrnihat in Meghalaya on Sunday night, sources said. Boro is the chief lieutenant of Bidyut Sinha, who is the kingpin of the illegal supari trade.

The sources said that Sinha's responsibility was to ensure that the supari-laden trucks reached Changsari, while Boro was responsible for onward transportation.

The Crime Branch produced Prasanta Boro in the CJM's court on Monday, which remanded him to three-days' police custody.

It may be recalled that the Crime Branch had recently arrested Sinha on the charge of attempting to revive the illegal smuggling of supari (dried areca nut) from Myanmar.

Sinha was arrested after the Crime Branch registered a case on January 25 last year in accordance with a directive given by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to thwart attempts to resume the illegal supari syndicate in Assam, along with other crimes.
