GUWAHATI: The crime branch of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate, on Wednesday, registered a case pertaining to the fake tweet attributed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claiming that schools and colleges will remain closed from November 20 as cases of Covid-19 have gone up in the State.

The Chief Minister directed the State Police to take action after the fake announcement surfaced on social media. Swinging into action, the Police registered a case (no-14/2021 u/s 419/120(B)/465/468/471/505(1)(b) of IPC r/w section 66 (d) of IT Act) and started investigation.

Flagging off the fake tweet, the Chief Minister took to his Twitter handle and wrote on Tuesday, "A fake tweet bearing my name is circulating saying that since cases of COVID-19 have gone up schools & colleges are being closed down from November 20. This is wrong & should not be heeded to. Stay off misinformation and fake news. I am advising Assam Police to take note and act."

The Chief Minister also attached the clipping of the fake message that read, "As per COVID-19 cases are increasing in Assam very fast. On 31st October it crossed 300+positive cases. So the Education department and the government decided to closed schools and colleges from 20th November."
