Criminals from outside create problems: DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta
STAFF REPORTER
GUWAHATI: State DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta has admitted that the number of thefts and other petty crimes increased in Guwahati. He, however, added that the situation is not that bad. He has also admitted that some criminals from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar come to the state by train and decamp after committing a crime. He views this as a problem.
The DGP said this before the media today.
On criminals from Bihar and UP committing crimes in Assam, the DGP said, "It is a problem. We have intensified special checking in Kokrajhar and Bongaigaon districts to keep them at bay."
He said that the Guwahati Police Commissioner took some measures like an all-out drive against thieves and snatchers soon after taking charge.
He said a section of youths generally go for partying and picnicing in the run-up to Christmas and the New Year. "However, if they do anything not acceptable, we will take action," he said.
He said, "The Chief Minister worries over people losing lives in accidents. The number of deaths in accidents has fallen slightly in the state from that last year. We wanted to bring down the number of accidents drastically. However, we could bring down the number slightly. The number of accidents has risen in nine districts. We will act to bring down accidents in these districts."
