GUWAHATI: The Customs Department has been able to seize a large number of foreign cigarettes while they were being smuggled into the country. Foreign cigarettes worth around Rs 2.5 crore have been confiscated by the authorities in just three days.

The customs officials informed that the contraband may have been smuggled in from Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Bhutan and distributed to different parts of the country via Guwahati. The consignments of contraband were moved using three courier services, which were apprehended in Guwahati, which is a transit town for the movement of narcotics. The individual consignments are said to be worth around Rs 1.82 crore, Rs 27 lakh, and Rs 35 lakh, respectively, according to the official.

It can be mentioned that the brand of cigarettes confiscated by the Customs Department is completely banned in India, as the packets do not carry the necessary statutory warning. The official also mentioned that the Customs Department has confiscated foreign cigarettes worth Rs 13.83 crore in the past year. Apart from that, they have also seized Rs 200 crore worth of beetle nuts, Rs 15 crore worth of morphine, and Rs 50 lakh worth of heroin in the past year.
