GUWAHATI: The residents, including the general public of Dakhingaon, have opposed the move of the GMC (Gauhati Municipal Corporation) to set up a waste treatment plant in the area. They have demanded that the move be revoked immediately. The protesting public also carried out a demonstration in this regard.

The public under the banner of 'Paschim Sonaighuli Abchalik Unnayan Samiti' has demanded that the GMC must revoke its decision to set up its 'Integrated Solid Waste Management Plant' at the complex of the 'Assam Survey Settlement Training Centre' at Dakhingaon. They also submitted a memorandum to the Chairman of the Centre in this regard.

The memorandum signed by the organization president, Deben Das pointed out, "The proposed 'Integrated Solid Waste Management Plant' will adversely affect the ground water and also the overall environment of the place. The entire region will become inhospitable. The air will also become polluted. Besides, the dumpers carrying the solid waste will also pose threat to life of children and residents."
