GUWAHATI: In a joint operation launched by the Fatashil-Ambari police team along with the Crime branch, prime accused of a daylight robbery -- Ashish Mandal alias Bappi was arrested on Wednesday night.

The robbery in broad daylight created fear among the people of the city. The robbery took place at around 4 pm on Tuesday at Itabhata under Fatasil Ambari Police Station.

A gang of six dacoits had entered the house of jewellery businessman Gautam Pal. At that time, his wife, two girls and a child were present in the house. The dacoits were armed with pistols. They allegedly threatened Pal's wife by placing a pistol of her head and looted Rs 5 lakh cash and jewellery items.

As the lane leading to Pal's house is narrow, the dacoits had parked their Renault Duster (AS 01DJ9604) on the main road. While trying to flee from the area, local people tried to stop them. The dacoits left the Duster and fled away on two scooties belonging to other people. However, while fleeing they fired at a person named Liton Mazumdar on the head.
