The Crime Branch of Guwahati Police on Thursday arrested a senior employee in the Kamrup (Metro) District Commissioner’s office on the charge of fraudulently preparing land records and creating fake land documents.

GUWAHATI: The Crime Branch of Guwahati Police on Thursday arrested a senior employee in the Kamrup (Metro) District Commissioner’s office on the charge of fraudulently preparing land records and creating fake land documents.

Nitul Das, a senior assistant in the sub-registrar’s branch at the DC’s office, was arrested by the Crime Branch on forgery charges. Subsequently, the Kharguli residence of Nitul Das was raided by the Crime Branch, and a large number of incriminating items were recovered. The items seized by the Crime Branch include 10 different types of office seals, more than 50 office files, a volume register, a computer, and a laptop, along with a cash amount of Rs 2,50,000.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to ‘X’ to announce the success of the Crime Branch, writing, “A huge racket involving the production of counterfeit land documents has been uncovered by the @GuwahatiPol today. After questioning an employee from the Sub-Registrar office in Guwahati and an advocate, the police obtained crucial information and conducted a raid at a location in Kharguli. During the raid, various items, such as volume registers, thumb impression books, fake official stamps, laptops, land records, and stamp papers, were discovered. These items were being used to create fraudulent historical records. The search is currently ongoing.”

Earlier, on Wednesday, the Crime Branch arrested one advocate named Mainul Haque. He was interrogated, and valuable information was gathered from him regarding the fraud. The Crime Branch also interrogated a Kanungo identified as Bolen Das of the Dispur Circle Office. According to a source, the Crime Branch registered a case and launched an investigation following a complaint from the former Dispur circle officer, Pappu Gogoi. Earlier, computer assistant Dhrubajyoti Barman was arrested. Sources said he used the circle officer’s i/d and password to access land records and create fake land documents. The police said advocate Mainul Haque took out a fake power of attorney to fraudulently register a plot of land.
