GUWAHATI: Debabrata Saikia, leader of the Opposition, has written a letter to Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, Director General of Police (DGP), Assam, demanding an impartial probe into the hit-and-run incident of October 1, 2021, in Guwahati.
In the letter, Saikia demanded that a special inquiry unit must be constituted to probe the hit-and-run incident. Besides this, the unit should also be given powers to probe into other angles of the incident like the high-profile event which was organized on October 1 at luxury hotel Taj Vivanta. "Who were the organizers of the event which was organized in Taj Vivanta? The event continued well after the curfew hours. COVID protocol was violated by the organizers of the event. What should be the quantum of punishment to the organizers of the event for violating COVID protocol? All these must be mentioned in the report of the special inquiry unit and it must be submitted in the court along with the charge sheet," said Saikia in the letter.
He further said, "COVID protocol was clearly violated by the event organizers and Taj Vivanta. However, police have not yet taken appropriate action against them? This has made the public wonder whether the law of the land is not safe for all citizens. The slow pace of the investigation has also made the public wonder if there has been political interference in this case."
The Kamrup (metro) district administration had issued a show cause notice to Taj Vivanta to submit CCTV camera footage and the guest list of the event held on October 1. The hotel management had been asked to specify the timings of the event and details about the guests and organizers. It has been alleged that the event continued till late at night, violating COVID protocol and curfew timings. The hit-and-run case accused Rajkanya Baruah was allegedly returning from that event in an inebriated condition when she hit few labourers at Rukminigaon with her car.
