GUWAHATI: The Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia has served a legal notice upon AIUDF MLA Karim Uddin Barbhuiya, demanding that the legislator from Sonai should tender an unconditional public apology within seven days and further withdraw the statements whereby he alleged that some Congress MLAs voted in favour of the BJP-led alliance during the recent Rajya Sabha elections in Assam.

The notice served by Saikia counsel also stated that criminal and civil action will be initiated against Barbhuiya under provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Information Technology Act, 2000 and relevant Rules, if fails to tender an apology and withdraw his statements within the stipulated time.

Referring to statements made before the media by Barbhuiya, the legal notice stated: ... "you alleged that 7-8 MLAs the Congress party voted for the BJP. You further alleged that a game was played by the Congress party in cohort with Sri Akhil Gogoi under the leadership of Sri (Prithviraj Prabhakar) Sathe and Sri Bhupen Bora. You also made a calumnious allegation that if the houses of the MLAs close to Sri Sathe are searched, packets and packets of cash will be recovered… the aforesaid statements made in the press meet are nothing but stories concocted without any basis and proof, made only to jeopardize the image of the Indian National Congress and the reputation of its MLAs."
