GUWAHATI: The health scare created by dengue fever in Karbi Anglong, with the epicenter in Diphu town, continued unabated as as many as 35 more cases were confirmed on Saturday.

A five-member team of experts from the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has already arrived in Diphu. It may be mentioned that there were 190 confirmed dengue cases in Diphu as on Thursday, along with three deaths due to the disease.

The experts' team from the GMCH tested more than 200 blood samples on Saturday and found 35 positive cases.

In view of the gravity of the situation, the experts' team has deployed healthcare workers, along with ASHA, Anganwadi workers and Arogya Mahila Samity members to make field visits to vulnerable areas and motivate the local people to get their blood checked at the Diphu Medical College and Hospital if they find any symptoms of dengue.

Doctors here said that the period between the last part of August and October-November is the peak season for outbreak of dengue fever. They further informed that so far 42 dengue cases have been confirmed in the Kamrup (M) district.

It may be mentioned that apart from the GMCH team, a team of the National Health Mission (NHM), Assam is already camping in the district.

Only 87 dengue cases were recorded in Assam between January 1 and October 6 this year, out of which 27 were in Kamrup (M).

The Diphu Municipal Corporation has also initiated preventive measures such as fogging operations to curb the dengue menace.

It may be mentioned in this context that 5,024 dengue cases (with one fatality) were reported in Assam in 2017. In 2018, the number plummeted to 166 cases (no fatality); in 2019, 196 cases were reported (no fatality); in 2020, only 33 cases were recorded (no fatality); in 2021, 103 cases were recorded (no fatality); till September this year, 74 dengue cases had been recorded across the state.
