GUWAHATI: The Dispur Police has busted a gang of fraudsters that duped a contractor to the tune of Rs 2.46 crore.
The accused, identified as Miraj Wasikur Rahman (50), Sahanur Ali (39), Masud Iqramul Majid (45), and Geetartha Gautam Borah (27) were arrested by the police on Friday. While Rahman was the mastermind of the gang, three others were his accomplices.
The police said that Rahman took Rs 2.46 crore from West Bengal-based contractor Chandra Prakash Bharodia on the pretext of providing contractual work.
Introducing himself as the chairman of Tai Ahom Unnayan Parishad (TAUP) Dhiren Gogoi, Rahman took the money from Bharodia and promised him to give the contract of various developmental works of the TAUP, said a police source.
In this regard, a case — 2560/21 has been registered against the gang following a complaint lodged by Bharodia.
The police have seized a luxury vehicle (AS01-ES2622) from the accused and have also recovered a fake work order of Rs 30 crore from his possession. It is to be noted that the seized vehicle's nameplate reads 'Member of G.D Council'.
