GUWAHATI: The 41-old-year Dispur Police Station, which is adjacent to the Assam Secretariat, is all set to change its address.

Sources said that only the official approval is awaited before the police station is shifted to a location near the Gopal Boro High School at Ganeshguri.

The Dispur Police Station is the second-oldest police station in Guwahati and it is busy to boot. It tackles all cases of the High Security zone, including those of the Ministers' Colony, MLAs' Hostel, Janata Bhawan and the Assam Legislative Assembly. This apart, the police station has jurisdiction over a large area of east Guwahati. There are two police outposts under it.

In the first four months of the ongoing year, over 1,000 cases have been registered at the police station.

However, despite its location and work profile, facilities were conspicuous by their absence. There is a dearth of potable water, washrooms and even chairs to sit on. The adjacent barracks are also in a dilapidated condition.

The sources said that the proposed new premises will make up for the facilities which are lacking at present.
