GUWAHATI: The District Commissioner of Kamrup (M), Assam, Pallav Gopal Jha, called a meeting of senior officials of multiple departments to relocate and rehabilitate the destitute of the city. A task force was also created to complete the task of relocating them within the next ten days. Additional Deputy Commissioners Jharna Patgiri, Lakhyajit Duaria, and Assistant Commissioner Anurag Rudra will serve as the district nodal officers for this operation. And an Assistant Commissioner of Police-ranked officer from the location will accompany the task force members, including the District Child Protection Officer and members of GMC and Non-governmental organisations, during the operations. A committee will also be formed to oversee the entire rehabilitation process.

The DC also took part in an operation carried out to relocate the destitute from some parts of the city on Tuesday night. He visited the Panbazar and Ulubari localities of the city and ensured that the people residing on the streets were relocated. He mentioned that the chief minister often visits parts of the city at night to check on various issues faced by city dwellers. He also added that the number of beggars in the city has increased considerably in the last few months, and steps are being taken towards moving them to government shelter homes and facilities of NGOs. He also mentioned that steps are being taken towards finding the reasons behind the increase in their numbers.

The operation was carried out under the instructions of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma, and officials of the Social Welfare Department and Child Line were also present during this operation. Four people were shifted to the night shelter, while an additional woman was shifted to the One Stop Centre in Beltola.
