Use of phones by driver identified as the second major reason of mishaps

GUWAHATI: Drunken driving is the prime cause of road accidents and casualties across the State. This has been revealed in the data of Assam State Transport department. The second reason is the use of mobile phones by the driver while driving.

Till April 2021, altogether 1,245 people died in 2,948 road accident incidents.

Of the 7,993 road accidents in 2018, as much as 8.1 per cent cases were due to the first reason; whereas 2.4 per cent of the incidents were due to the second cause. Altogether 2,866 people died due to road accidents that year.

In 2019, a total of 3,207 people died in 8,250 road accidents across the State. As much as 3.4 per cent of these cases were due to the first reason while 0.7% was because of the second major cause.

In 2020, altogether 2,629 road casualties were registered against 6,593 accident cases. Of them, 4.9 % happened because of people driving in an inebriated state; and 2.4% accident cases took place when the drivers were talking in mobile phones while driving.
