GUWAHATI: Assam's Education Minister Ranoj Pegu has assured the additional teachers of high schools in the State that steps will be taken to ensure that they receive their salaries on a regular basis.

The Minister's assurance came after a delegation of the All Assam Secondary Additional Teachers' Association apprised him that around 4,000 additional teachers of various high schools have not been paid their salaries for the last 3-5 months.

Pegu informed that certain independent rules and regulations of the State Finance Department were posing as a hurdle in the way of providing regular salaries to these additional teachers.

These aggrieved teachers were appointed as contractual additional teachers on the basis of merit in 2010. Subsequently, the services of those appointed in the Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) were regularized, while the services of the majority of those appointed in other places were almost regularized.

However, the almost-regularized teachers are still deprived of regular salaries.

The teachers' association informed that these additional teachers receive their salaries under the ceiling system and not the Treasury. Non-release of ceiling for the last 3-5 months had resulted in non-payment of their salaries.
