Election Commission of India postpones Assam bypolls

GUWAHATI: The ECI (Election Commission of India), on Tuesday, decided not to conduct the by-elections to the Legislative Assembly constituencies (LACs) of Sibsagar and Rangapara.

The ECI said in a press statement that the Commission has taken this decision after receiving inputs expressing difficulties in conducting the election and issues related to it "at this stage" from the Chief Secretary and the Chief Electoral Officer from Assam. The two LAC seats became vacant following the demise of the respective MLAs – Pranab Kumar Gogoi (Sibsagar) and Rajen Barthakur (Rangapara).
