GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has started a mission to evict the illegal street vendors from Guwahati. They have already started with places like Ganeshguri, Downtown, Six Mile, etc. As the rainy season is approaching, the drainage system needs to be looked after because it will eventually lead to flooding in certain areas of the city. The reason for this eviction is to stop the illegal trade of the vendors.

According to the GMC enforcement team, the major objectives are to clear the city of illegal trade and build a proper drainage system. The vendors should be provided with a specific place where they can sell their goods. Footpaths are not meant for vendors; they are meant for pedestrians. Due to the numerous vendors on the footpaths, pedestrians face a lot of problems. The team will be imposing a fine if they try to run their business on the footpath even after eviction.

A few eateries, food carts, and vendors of fruits and vegetables have already been asked to leave. There are problems, such as the difficulty of parking hospital ambulances since food trucks are too close to footpaths. GMC has decided to evict every day in an attempt to prevent problems.

According to one of the street vendors, evicting them would make it impossible for them to survive since this is the way they make their living every day. So, they are asking the government to look into the situation and give them a place to do business.
