Guwahati: It was a very sad moment for many as craine demolished many of the small temples which were set up on footpaths and along the roadside.

The district administration conducted an eviction drive in parts of Guwahati city and demolished several small Shani temples and Hanuman Temples.

These temples or places of worship were built without proper permission from the district administration and the municipal corporation.

People who were managing these temples claimed that they were not even given any notice before the eviction drive.

While the Circle Officer who had come for the eviction drive said that the drive has been conducted as per the order issued by the Gauhati High Court prior to COVID lockdown.

This comes after the Gauhati High Court (HC) issued an order to the district administration from Public interest litigation (PIL) this year in February regarding the matter and following that the Kamrup (M) district administration has asked all the individuals, families and organizations to vacate the premises within 30 days which they have illegally occupied.

The notice also mentioned that no individual notices will be sent to businesses or households which have been encroaching on government property.

According to a media report Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner, Biswajit Pegu said that the eviction drive will be started after 30 days. "There are many lands allocated for government and semi-government offices, which have been encroached," he added.

The massive clean-up being conducted in Guwahati by the authorities under the Gauhati High Court.

Guwahati civil authorities have conducted various eviction drives across the city in an effort to clear out roads and pavements to ease traffic congestion.
