GUWAHATI: State Housing and Urban Affairs Ashok Singhal said on Wednesday that an eviction drive would be conducted in the city in connection with the 'Mission Flood-Free Guwahati' initiative.
Guwahati has been suffering from the problem of flash floods. Chief Minister Himanta BiswaSarma had said that his government was committed to make the capital city free from artificial floods. He issued instructions to the authorities concerned to take steps to solve the issue of artificial floods in Guwahati.
Accordingly, the 'Mission Flood-Free Guwahati' has been launched. Minister Singhal said on Wednesday, "Eviction drive will be conducted soon in Guwahati at locations where people have illegally encroached lands near rivers and streams." The eviction process has started in Rukminigaon.
He further said that steps like desilting of the Bahini River had been taken to solve the problem of artificial flooding in the city. The department has also taken developmental project for construction of guard wall in the Bharalu River. Desilting of drains has also started in various parts of Guwahati.On Tuesday, desiltation at Silsakoand at Sijubari was carried out.
