GUWAHATI: The commercial hub of the city, Fancy Bazaar, which was the hotspot for indulgence, irrespective of festivals and ceremonies, is on the brink of fading from its former glory. In the midst of the wedding and festive seasons, the market, by this time of the year, would be buzzing with sales, however, this year, the footfall has not even reached half of the previous years.
Traders of the market have blamed online shopping as the prime cause behind the slow business. Protesting that customers, especially the youngsters, are starting to evade the traditional style of shopping, the fad of online shopping has all and sundry under its grip. “We no longer see the usual rush of families spending the day in the market. As the market offers a plethora of commodities which ranges from the summit to the dot, customers have it all here. The thrill of first-hand examining and buying after thorough scrutiny has faded eventually leading to an economic slow-down of Fancy Bazar,” said a trader of the market.
