GUWAHATI: The recent cutting of very old trees on the Gauhati University (GU) campus in recent days has attracted criticism from several circles, including students and environmentalists.

Some of the students of the university accused the university of undertaking this project to cut down multiple old trees on the campus while cutting down branches of several others in the name of trimming and beautification. They also mentioned that the university had undertaken this project during the Durga Puja holidays as the students would not be present on campus and there would be no one to protest against this activity.

Several environmentalists also pointed out that Gauhati University is one of the greenest campuses in the region and home to several bird species, while adding that the felling of trees will have a negative impact on their habitat, thus adversely affecting the ecology. They also mentioned that on one hand, the government is trying to set world records for the distribution of saplings as well as a plantation of saplings, while on the other, they are trying to cut down on the existing ones in the name of development.

Some students also pointed out that these trees are an essential part of the heritage of the university and help reduce the dust and population on the campus. They also mentioned that the research scholars who are still on campus will attempt to prevent any further cutting of trees on campus.
