GUWAHATI: Former Assam Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia's son Ashok Kumar Saikia was granted bail by the court of the special magistrate (CBI), on Monday.

Ashok Kumar Saikia was arrested in a special case which originates from the chargesheet no 9/2005 dated 17.06 2005 submitted by CBI following the investigation made in two cases, viz. RC Case no.5/E/2001- Cal and RC case no.6/E/2001-Cal which were registered by the CBI on transfer of the Paltan Bazar PS case no. 199/98 and no.202/98 respectively. These two Paltan Bazar cases no 199/98 and no.202/98 were filed on 6.4.1998 by Assam State Cooperative Agriculture and Rural Development Rank (ASCARD) Ltd, Guwahati by lodging two separate FIRs.

The arrest warrant against Ashok Kumar Saikia was issued by the special magistrate (CBI) after he failed to appear for two court hearings. Later talking to media persons after being granted bail, Saikia said, "I had availed a loan amount of 9,37,701 from the bank. I have repaid the dues, both principal and interest."

The bank had reportedly not submitted the papers certifiying that Saikia had repaid the dues of the bank.
