GUWAHATI: Former State Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s security cover has been brought down to Z category from Z+. Gogoi has termed it as an arm-twisting tactics by the State government against him for being vocal against the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act).

Addressing a press conference in his official residence here on Friday, Gogoi questioned, “If the security scenario in Assam has really improved, what has led Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to be under such an airtight security? The situation in the State is grim, and Sonowal and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma are responsible for that. People from all walks of life are taking to the streets these days. The government blames it on the Congress for provoking the people of the State against the CAA. The fact, however, remains that such a massive protest is never possible through provocation by any party or organization. This is a spontaneous protest. This is because Sarbananda Sonowal promised to make the State free from foreigners before the election. However, after coming to power he’s trying to bring Bangladeshis to the State. If the Congress government had brought foreigners to the State, why didn’t the BJP government deport them? Now they’re trying to protect foreigners.” On the reported move to open tollgates on national highways in the State, Gogoi said, “Because of its poor economic condition the Northeast should be exempted from tollgates.”
