Free-of-cost sugar for tea garden workers soon

GUWAHATI: The supply of two kg free-of-cost sugar per tea garden labourers' family per month was a Budget proposal in fiscal 2019-20. There was a Budgetary allocation of Rs 40 crore for the scheme. However, the scheme is yet to see light of the day.

When asked on that scheme, State Food and Civil Supplies Minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury said, "For some technical reasons we couldn't procure sugar for the scheme. Now we're planning to procure sugar at the district level. We hope to implement the scheme by 2021. The government is committed for the development of tea labourers."

The scheme was included in the 2019-20 budget to make tea garden labourers do away with the habit of taking salt with tea, instead of sugar. Taking salt with tea is harmful for women as it leads to various problems among them.
