GUWAHATI: An allegedly "distorted" Bihu dance performed at a function in New Delhi on Monday to welcome the President of Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, to India has sparked off resentment in the State and an organization named Bihu Kristi Parishad, Assam has dashed off letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in this connection.

The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has also condemned the dance performance in question and demanded an inquiry into the matter. AASU general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah said that the sentiments of the Assamese people have been hurt through the distorted presentation of Bihu dance. He called for a inquiry to identify the persons responsible for the distorted Bihu dance.

Bihu Kristi Parishad, Assam said that this is not the first time that a distorted version of Bihu dance has been presented in the national capital and a similar thing had happened earlier during the 'Fit India' programme. The organization said that "misrepresentation of Bihu is a crime" and an insult to the Assamese people. It further urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to institute a probe into the incident.

In the letter to the Prime Minister, the organization pointed out that the dress code, song as well as gestures and postures of the Bihu dancers were improper and expressed grief that such an incident had taken place.
