GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court directed the Finance Department of Assam to ensure that the budget for setting up an office of the Transgender Welfare Board should be released at the earliest.

The division bench, comprising Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta and Justice Mitali Thakuria, during the hearing of the PIL (2/2022) filed by the All Assam Transgender Association also directed the director of the Social Welfare Department to ensure that the office of the Transgender Welfare Board should be made functional. The hearing of the PIL is re-notified for June 23, 2023. The counsel representing the Social Welfare Department submitted that a room has been identified in the Tritiyo Niwas run by an NGO, namely, the North East Voluntary Association of Rural Development (NEVARD), for setting up the office of the Transgender Welfare Board. He further states that a fund of Rs. 6,00,000 has been approved for furnishing the office. But to date, the matter is stuck with the Finance Department for sanction.
