GUWAHATI: A PIL (public interest litigation) has been filed at the Gauhati High Court for waiver of tuition fees of Non-Government Educational Institutions.

The PIL (39/2021) has been filed by Fazluzzaman Mazumder, a lawyer of the Gauhati High Court. He has expressed concern regarding the problems faced by the students and their parents during this pandemic.

In this regard, Advocate General of the State, D. Saikia has sought a week to appraise the Court as to what the government proposes to do over the issue highlighted in PIL.

The petitioner has argued in the Court that tuition fees are assessed based on the infrastructure expenditure, education facilities, staff salary and operation cost incurred by the school.

"Infrastructure and operation costs that the schools may incur for regular studies have been reduced because the schools are not opening. Therefore, full tuition fees are unreasonable and unjustified," the petitioner stated. The next hearing date is fixed for July 19.
