GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has directed the Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Assam, Environment & Forest Department to get a satellite survey of the Madhura River done to the extent it traverses through the Cachar district.

In response to the Public Interest Litigation (PIL/6/2019) filed in Gauhati High Court by Agronee Club of Udharbond of the Cachar district, the Department of Forest, Government of Assam, filed an affidavit affirming that the tenure of the permit granted to carry out mining activities from the Thaikul Nala tributary has come to an end and that no further extraction activities are taking place in the area pertaining to which the instant PIL has been filed.

However, the petitoner claimed that in garb of the permit granted for extraction of minor minerals from Thaikul Nala tributary, actually the minerals were extracted from the Madhura River. In view of the “peculiar facts of the case”, the court directed the Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Assam, Environment & Forest Department to get satellite survey of the Madhura River done to the extent it traverses through the Cachar district. The court further directed that the survey report should be submitted on the next date of hearing on May 25, 2023.
