GUWAHATI: After receiving a huge backlash from the students, Gauhati University has withdrawn its decision to release the contractual teachers from their services.

"The decision was taken given the current deadlock because of the discontinuation of the services of the contractual faculty members and representatives of the stakeholder organizations and other associations," stated a notification issued by the GU Registrar following the approval of GU Vice-Chancellor on Tuesday.

It is to be noted that, the GU Registrar issued a notice on July 2 that the contractual appointment of teaching faculty has been stopped with effect from June 30.

The decision was vehemently criticized by the student unions of the varsity namely AASU (All Assam Students' Union) GU Unit and GU Post Graduate Students' Union.

The students stated that the decision has been taken without any planning and it is against the interest of the students. The AASU underlined that many departments will be shut down due to the release of the contractual teachers.
