GUWAHATI: Recent changes were made in sewage routes and the Sluice Gate at Bharalamukh was closed in view of the ongoing Pushkar Mela 2019 celebration, which began on November 5. Now, residents of Anil Nagar and Tarun Nagar are complaining about clogged drain as heaps of plastic waste blocks the flow of water through the city.

The locals have complained that the area has not been cleaned since a long time and this is the cause of the unhygienic environment. There are a total 330 drains under GMC and according to officials, due to outstanding dues, no contractors are willing to take on the job of cleaning the drains. Upon being asked about the District Commissioner (DC) Biswajeet Pegu’s opinion regarding the issue, he said, “It is high time that the GMC officials pulled up their socks and got down to business. They have procrastinated for a long time as it is. Also, we have planned for sewage cleaning in two rounds this time, one on December and one before the rainy season due to hygiene reasons.”
