GUWAHATI: The All India Primary Teachers Federation (AIPTF) said that the decisions taken by the Assam Government would adversely affect education in the state.
AIPTF's working president Ratul Chandra Goswami said, "The State government's decision to run some schools in English medium in each district to let the students of the state compete efficiently at the all-India level is a faulty one. A reality check makes it crystal clear that over 30 per cent of students of the state read in English medium private schools. Despite being educated in English medium, such students from the state cannot come with flying colours at all-India-level competitions."
He said, "The spread of education in the state is limited to the institutions set up by the public. The State Government has not even set up 500 schools in the state. Against such a backdrop, the decision to stop the process of school provincialization is not an acceptable one. The Education Minister says that Assam has more than enough schools, and as such provincialization of schools does not arise in the state. He also says that the need of the hour in the state is the amalgamation of schools. If that is true, what makes the government set up model schools in the state?"
Goswami said, "The government wants to bring education under the PPP (public-private-partnership) mode. The State government adopted the PPP model in 2008. We have been opposing it since then. The 100 schools, which the State government wants to set up in tea gardens, will be in the PPP mode. And the amalgamation of schools is going on under the PPP model. To translate the constitutional rights on education into reality, we need to give up the PPP mode in education, or else, the state government will commodify education within a decade."
