GUWAHATI: The financial constraints among a section of the society have led to a flourish in the human trafficking business among certain unscrupulous members of the society. An investigation carried out by GRP has thrown new light into the human trafficking racket where it was discovered that each agent involved in the racket received around Rs 15 to 35 thousand for each victim. What is shocking is that the people involved in the business are themselves residents of Assam who have set forth to exploit the people of the State.

On May 17, RPF and Railway Child-line rescued three underage girls from the clutches of traffickers and handed them over to GRP. A case (81/19 U/S 370/ 37/ 372/ 34 IPC) was registered. The young girls were from Tinsukia. The captors Anima Ekka and Thaider Ekka were also taken into custody and upon interrogation and investigation, GRP managed to catch three more agents. Hariram Valmiki, Sushila alias Gurbari, who are both from Namrup were caught on July 7 and Avinash Karmakar was caught from Delhi on July 23. The investigation was led by GRP SI Binu Hazarika.

According to GRP source, the agents Anima Ekka and Thaider Ekka were victims of human trafficking themselves and had now turned into agents. The mega-mind behind the racket is Alom alias Raish Alom alias Bullet who is absconding. Alom ran a placement agency in Delhi were employed agents to procure poor people from the State and engaged the trafficked victims in various labours. Alom himself is from Dimajuli in Udalguri as well as Avinash Karmakar, who worked for Alom.
