KHANAPARA: The 'Guwahati Bhaona Samaroh 2022, which began on May 14, ended on Tuesday with the staging of 'Kurma Avataar' bhaona (mythological play) by the artistes of tehe Panchajanya Natyagosthi from Malow Ali, Jorhat at the central auditorium of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM).

According to a press release, the programme was jointly organized by Cultural Forum, USTM and supported by IQAC, USTM and Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Assam.

The function began with lighting of the lamp by Mrinalini Devi, Vice President, Axam Xahitya Xabha; Satradhikar Prafulla Pran Mahanta of Belguri Xatra, Narayanpur; Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of USTM; Prof GD Sharma, Vice Chancellor of USTM; Dr Balendra Kumar Das, Pro-VC of USTM; Padmashree Surjya Hazarika; Prabhat Chandra Das, Joint Secretary, Axom Adarsha Siksha Sansad, Axam Xahitya Xabha; Dr Sikha Bezbarua Goswami, president of the Guwahati Bhaona Samaroh; Prabhat Bordoloi, secretary of the Guwahati Bhaona Samaroh and others.

It was attended by hundreds of USTM students and cultural enthusiasts.

Welcoming the audience including artistes, litterateurs and Vaishnavite scholars to USTM, Mahbubul Hoque said: "We are very happy to host this Bhaona as this will boost our students because they will get new ideas about the cultural heritage of the region."

Addressing the gathering, Mrinalini Devi said: "We hope that the invaluable contribution made by Mahapurush Sankaradeva will always encourage and support the Assamese community to achieve newer heights."

The keynote address was delivered by Prabhat Chandra Das. He thanked USTM for hosting the Bhaona Samaroh and said that Srimanta Sankaradeva first used songs and dramas as effective means of reforming and reconstructing the society.
