Guwahati Municipal Corporation announces new rules for garbage disposal

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has announced some new rules regarding garbage disposal in the city. New groups will be allotted the duties of garbage collection and segregation in the city, and the fees for door-to-door garbage collection have also been increased.

According to the new rules, the newly appointed ward development committees will take care of garbage collection in eight wards of the city. 25 wards will see the appointment of new NGOs for the duty, while the old NGOs will be retained for 26 wards, and one ward has been declared the Model Ward. 100% of the garbage will be collected in the model ward. It will also be equipped with CCTV cameras in order to detect any violations in terms of garbage disposal, and proper action will be taken accordingly. The ward development committees will be comprised of local residents, GMC officials, engineers, and other experts. All necessary equipment will be provided by the GMC. According to a statement, the number of model wards will be gradually increased by the GMC.

Also, the fees for door-to-door garbage collection have been increased to Rs 50 from the existing Rs 30. The statement also mentioned that the public should also share the responsibility of keeping the city clean by using proper dustbins. This will help both in the collection of garbage and the prevention of floods caused by the clogging of drains by garbage.
