GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) undertook an eviction drive in the area near Cotton University and Nehru Park, Guwahati. This step comes at a time when the Students' Union of Cotton College threatened to undertake a protest against the proposed establishment of a Khao Gully next to their campus.
Ongoing speculations about the Khao Gully project being implemented near the hostels of Cotton University led to the students expressing their opinions against the same. The students mentioned that their education will have a negative impact if the same is set up. Following this, Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania mentioned that they will no longer set up the Khao Gully in Panbazar and that a new location will be chosen for setting up the street food zone.
And thereafter, the authorities went ahead to conduct an eviction drive in the locality to remove the temporary shops, consisting mainly of foot carts, that have been doing business in the region near Nehru Park, Cotton University, and Food Villa. They also asked the street vendors to vacate the areas as soon as possible or face stringent action.
The victims of the eviction, however, mentioned that this step will negatively impact their livelihood and demanded that the GMC first decide on a new location to relocate them before conducting the eviction. It can be mentioned that this zone gets a large number of customers every day, and a large number of the vendors have these stalls as their only source of income.
