Guwahati: Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has proposed to rename Kalapahar as Nilachal Nagar.

Kalapahar has been named after the tyrant Muslim General of Bengal Sultanate Kalapahad, who was responsible for the attack on the famous Shaktipeeth Kamakhya temple.

In February this year, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced to launch a portal to seek suggestions on the change of names across the state.

Notably, on the portal, people would be able to apply for a change of name to places that are not in consonance with the culture and tradition.

Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, the Assam CM had said that there's much in a name and also added that name of a city, town or village should represent its culture, tradition, and civilization.

''THERE'S MUCH IN A NAME

The name of a city, town, or village should represent its culture, tradition & civilization.

We shall launch a portal to invite suggestions on change of names across Assam which are contrary to our civilization, culture & derogatory to any caste or community'', he tweeted.

While speaking at a Bhumi Pujan ceremony of a medical college in Kalapahar, Guwahati, on Tuesday, the Assam CM informed that he informed all the MLAs to consult with the people and suggest a suitable name.
