GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has decided to impose a strict penalty of Rs 10,000 upon persons who dump garbage in public places or spit in such places.

According to GMC Commissioner Devashish Sharma, there was an earlier provision for imposing a fine of Rs 1,000 for these offences, but the amount of the fine is being increased with a view to reducing such unhygienic practices through strict initiation of punitive measures. If any offender refuses to pay the fine, then a police complaint will lodged against that person by the GMC.

Sharma said that many well-to-do, educated people can be seen stopping their respective vehicles and throwing garbage bags on the streets. Moreover, he said, Guwahati is full of habitual spitters who literally paint various pavements, walls and staircases red with their paan or paan masala-laced spittle. Sharma appealed to all sections of residents of Guwahati to cooperate in keeping the city clean.
