GUWAHATI: The contract of door-to-door garbage collection by non-profit organizations (NGOs) initiated by the GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation) expired in 2021, and since then the contract has not been renewed.

It is not possible to make a flood free city without proper management of the garbage, and with people littering everywhere. The NGOs are collecting garbage door-to-door voluntarily without being paid, and when asked to pay, most of the households refused.

Remuneration has not been granted to the GMC workers since the Covid-19 pandemic struck. Door-to-door collection of garbage will be affected if the GMC workers do not cooperate. The workers have demanded that their pending dues should be cleared. The GMC had floated a tender for the management of garbage collection and garbage dumping but no progress was made. Now a new tender will be floated.
