GUWAHATI: The last solar eclipse of the year is going to begin on Thursday morning. However, the annular eclipse will not be visible in Assam from where the only partial solar eclipse will be visible from 8:39 am to 11:36 am.
Addressing a press meet here on Wednesday, curator of Guwahati Planetarium Babul Chandra Bora said that planetarium has arranged solar filter for the public to watch the eclipse from 8:30 am to 11:36 am. “The eclipse will start in Assam at 8:39 am and the maximum eclipse will occur at 10:02 am and will end at 11:36,” said Bora.
Vice president of Pragjyotish Amateur Astronomers’ Association Kishore Baruah and Tapan Kumar Sarma, the central executive member of All India Peoples’ Science Network stated that the sun would be seen with 40% coverage from Assam and that the actual time may be changed a little. However, in India, the annular eclipse will be visible in most prominently from Kannur, Ooty, Coimbatore and some other parts of South India.
They strictly warned peopled not to watch the eclipse without eye protection as, witnessing the eclipse with naked eyes will harm. They also mentioned that there is no need to follow the blind beliefs and to make it sure to put filter while witnessing the eclipse with telescope or binocular. Kishore Baruah said that watching the eclipse for more than 20 seconds continuously is also harmful. The minimum time to watch the eclipse is 10 seconds and the maximum is 20 seconds. If anyone wants to watch it for more time then a break after 10-20 seconds is necessary.
