GUWAHATI: In yet another shocking case of ragging in educational institutions in Assam, a group of senior students at Guwahati's Gurukul Grammar School thrashed a student's father for objecting to his child being ragged by the unruly bunch of kids.

A male student of Gurukul Grammar School's class XI was allegedly tortured in the name of ragging by his seniors. When the student's father spoke out against the ragging, the students started beating him black and blue, badly injuring him.

In 2022, a senior student allegedly stole a gold necklace from a junior student at the Assam Engineering Institute (AEI) in the guise of ragging. Furthermore, the victim junior year student was allegedly undressed and tormented. The seniors also used filthy language at him and thrashed the rookie.

According to reports, the seniors also demanded Rs 500 from the rookie student. When he did not cooperate, the elders severely tormented and pummelling him.

According to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, a ragging case at Dibrugarh University has come to light last year in which a student jumped from the hostel building.

Taking on twitter, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also urged that, “A Dibrugarh University student has been injured in a suspected case of ragging. A tight eye was kept on things, and follow-up action was planned with the district administrator. Efforts are being made to apprehend the culprit, while the victim is receiving medical treatment.”

He further added, "Appeal to students, say NO to Ragging"

On the other hand, on Thursday, Basistha police seized the school bus involved in a hit-and-run accident in Guwahati's Ganeshguri neighbourhood that claimed the life of a schoolgirl.

The school bus with the registration number 'AS-01-PC-7411' is registered to Royal Global School in Lokhra. The bus driver, identified as Bipul Boro, has been arrested, according to authorities. In connection with the incident, the bus's handyman has also been detained.

The event occurred as the girl was walking to school with her older sister. According to sources, a speeding school bus crashed with the scooter they were riding in before fleeing the scene. While the minor girl was killed on the scene, her sibling was seriously injured and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Priya Kumari, a class 11 student of Little Flower School in the city's Hatigaon district, has been identified as the deceased student.
