GUWAHATI: In a heart- rending incident on Friday morning, the son of a former Rajya Sabha member from Assam reportedly committed suicide in Guwahati.
The suicide victim, Dhruba Gogoi- son of Tilok Gogoi, a former Rajya Sabha member of the Congress party from 1977 to 1980, shot himself to death.
According to sources, Dhruba, aged around 54 years, allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with a pistol at his apartment in city's Rukminigaon area between 10.30 and 11 AM.
Originally hailing from Jorhat, Dhruba had been living in the city for a long time now. He is survived by his wife and two daughters aged about 7 and 10 respectively. He was 52 years old at the time of death.
A close friend revealed that Dhruba had been battling with a nerve-related disease, suspected to be Parkinson's disease, since a long time. He was also suffering from depression, most probably due to his health problems, he said.
"We don't know what was going on in his mind. If we did, we could have averted the tragic incident. He was a very friendly and helpful guy. Our only concern now is those he has left behind- his wife and two daughters aged about 7 and 10 years," the friend said, declining to be named.
The friend also said his family had no inkling at all about his motive for suicide, only ascribing it to depression on account of his health problem. He is said to have dropped off his daughters in school, before coming home and committing the tragic deed.
His relatives are in shock at the unexpected incident and declined to comment on the incident.
Dhruba Gogoi was the owner of an automobile showroom based in Rukmingaon. He is also known to be associated with the real estate business.
Meanwhile, local police reached the scene to assess the situation. The sleuths of Crime Investigation Department (CID) also arrived at the scene to gather clues. Further investigation is ongoing.
The dead body has been sent for post- mortem, according to procedure. His last rites will be conducted at the Nabagraha crematorium.
