Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on July 7, announced the decision to expand the city of Guwahati in the unforeseeable future.

The city will be extended till Jagiroad in the east and will stretch up to Palashbari in the west.

The Assam CM stated that 8-lane highways will connect Jagiroad and Palashbari to Guwahati.

Notably, Guwahati, which is known as "Gateway to North-East India", happens to be the largest city in Assam and is the major metropolis in Northeast India. It also houses Dispur, the capital of Assam, which is located in the circuit city region of Guwahati.

The Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is located on the west of the city while Narengi is situated on its eastern flanks and the city lies between the Brahmaputra River's banks and the Shillong plateau's foothills.

On the other hand, the north Guwahati region, which is situated on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra, is gradually getting absorbed into the city.

Meanwhile, it is evident that Guwahati is getting congested day by day and hence, it is a much-needed move as the city's population is continuously on the rise while the total area of the city remains stagnant.
