Guwahati: Two bodies found in city

GUWAHATI: The discovery of two bodies in the city within a span of 24 hours has sent the city police into a tizzy.

The body of a youth was found dead in a parked autorickshaw in the Kharghuli area early on Saturday. The body was witnessed by locals, who then informed the police. An investigation launched by the police led to the identification of the dead youth as Rupam Das, a resident of the nearby Beltol of Kharghuli.

A police source disclosed that Rupam was addicted to drugs and had been staying at a rehabilitation centre for the last six months. However, his mother had brought him home just before Durga Puja. Rupam had gone out of his house at around 4 PM on Friday. He, however, did not return home at night. His body was found on Saturday morning in an autorickshaw parked by the roadside in the Kharguli area. The body has been sent for a post-mortem.

The second discovery of a body, believed to be that of a trans person, was reported from the Chandmari area. The body was found in a drain near the Assam Engineering Institute (AEI), with marks on the face and neck. The police believe that the body was dumped there after murdering the person from the LGBTQ community somewhere else.

A source said, “The person was brutally killed and may not belong to any local ‘gharana’ of Kinnar (trans person), but is still transgender according to the Trans Act 2023. The dead body was found at the Assam Engineering Institute in Chandmari. It is hurtful to see that there is so much hatred and violence against the transgender community in general. It is important for the state and the people to find the murderer, as this is a threat to humanity as a whole.”

Teams from the CID, dog squad and forensics were combing the site for clues as the police continue their investigation into the case.
