Guwahati: Children's Day also known as 'Bal Diwas' is celebrated on November 14 every year on the occasion of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's birthday. Pandit Nehru was India's first Prime Minister and was extremely popular among children. He was fondly called Chacha Nehru.

Today marks the 131st birth anniversary of Pandit Nehru.

The foundation of Children's Day was laid in 1925. Back then 'Universal Children's Day' was celebrated on November 20 keeping with the United Nations.

In 1959, Children's Day was celebrated for the first in India. However, after the death of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, it was decided to celebrate Children's Day to commemorate his birth anniversary. Since then, 14 November has been celebrated as Children's Day in India.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru also fondly remembered as 'Chacha Nehru' was born on November 14, 1889, in Allahabad. Nehru had great affection for children and he considered children to be the future of the country. Because of his affection towards children, children also loved him and called him 'Chacha Nehru'. And for this reason, Nehru's birthday is celebrated as Children's Day.

On the eve of Children's Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and wrote, "My humble tribute to the country's first Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary."

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal wrote on Twitter," Today's children are tomorrow's future. My best wishes and greetings to my young friends on #ChildrensDay. Let us together build a strong and prosperous Assam that provides the best for our children."
